Telescope Mounts Explained: Alt-Azimuth vs. Equatorial

If you’ve ever bought a telescope and found the view shaking every time you touch the eyepiece — or watched a planet drift out of frame every thirty seconds — the telescope wasn’t the problem. The mount was.

Most first-time buyers spend all their attention on aperture and magnification and almost none on the thing the telescope actually sits on. This guide breaks down how mounts actually work, the real trade-offs between the two main types, and how to figure out which one fits how you actually plan to observe.

What a Mount Actually Does

A telescope mount has one job on paper — hold the tube steady and let you point it — but in practice it’s doing three things at once: supporting the weight of the optical tube without vibration, letting you aim precisely at a target that might be a fraction of a degree wide, and compensating for the fact that the sky is moving. Earth’s rotation carries every star across your eyepiece at a steady 15 arcseconds per second, fast enough that a planet can slide out of view in under a minute at high magnification.

Alt-Azimuth Mounts: Point and Go

An alt-azimuth (alt-az) mount moves the way your arm does when you point at something: up and down, and left and right. No alignment ritual, no counterweights. The Dobsonian is the best-known variant, trading tracking convenience for enormous aperture per dollar.

The trade-off shows up in astrophotography: because the field of view subtly rotates over time (field rotation), stars smear into arcs after 20–30 seconds of exposure. For visual use this is irrelevant; for a camera sensor, it’s a hard ceiling.

Equatorial Mounts: Built to Track the Sky

An equatorial (EQ) mount tilts one axis to align with Earth’s own rotation. Once polar-aligned, a single, slow, constant-speed motor cancels out the sky’s apparent motion entirely — no field rotation. That’s why every serious astrophotography setup uses one. Do You Need “GoTo”?

Both types now come in computerized “GoTo” versions that slew to and track targets automatically. Worth the premium if you’re observing from light-polluted skies chasing faint targets; optional if you’re mostly looking at the Moon and planets from a reasonably dark site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert an alt-az mount to track like an equatorial one?

A wedge accessory can tilt an alt-az mount to the correct polar angle, but by the time you’ve bought it, the mount is usually no lighter or cheaper than a purpose-built EQ mount.

Is a heavier mount always more stable?

Generally yes, up to a point. The bigger issue is matching mount payload capacity to actual tube weight — a common mistake with big fast-aperture reflectors on light EQ mounts.

Do I need polar alignment for casual astrophotography?

Rough alignment is fine for short exposures of the Moon or planets. Anything longer, or deep-sky imaging, needs a proper polar alignment routine.
