ABOUT US

About The Sky Explorer

Independent astronomy gear research, written by people who’ve been through the frustrating first nights ourselves.

The Sky Explorer exists because buying a first telescope is a lot more confusing than it should be. Spec sheets are written for people who already know what focal ratio means, retailer “top 10” lists rotate whichever product pays the highest commission, and forums assume you already own three telescopes. We built this site to be the resource we wished existed when we started.

What We Do

We research, compare, and write buying guides for telescopes, astrophotography gear, and stargazing accessories, aimed at people buying their first — or second — setup. We’re an independent publisher, not a manufacturer or retailer, and we don’t accept payment from brands in exchange for coverage or ranking. Our content is supported by affiliate commissions when readers buy through our links, explained in full on our affiliate disclosure page. That arrangement never determines which product we recommend first.

How We Evaluate Gear

📋

Manufacturer Data

Published optical specs, mount type, and included accessories, cross-checked against the maker’s own listings.

🔍

Independent Reviews

We cross-reference reviews from other working astronomers and long-term owners to separate genuine strengths from one-off complaints.

🎯

Use-Case Fit

A telescope that’s “better on paper” is often the wrong pick for a specific reader — we weigh portability and budget too.

🔄

Ongoing Revision

Prices and lineups change constantly. We revisit and date every guide rather than letting it go stale.

Where we haven’t personally tested a specific unit, we say so plainly. Our full scoring criteria are on our editorial policy page.

Who’s Behind The Sky Explorer

The Sky Explorer is run by a small editorial team with a shared background in amateur astronomy — the kind that starts with a department-store telescope, a lot of frustrating first nights, and a slow climb up the learning curve this site is designed to shorten for the next person. We write, fact-check, and update every guide ourselves. Questions or corrections are always welcome through our contact page.

Our Editorial Standards

  • We recommend products based on merit, never on which pays the highest commission.
  • Every affiliate relationship is disclosed, and disclosure never changes a recommendation.
  • We correct errors publicly and promptly when caught by readers or our own review process.
  • We link to primary sources — manufacturer data, established publications, and organizations like NASA — rather than asking you to take our word for it.
