The Perseids peak on the night of August 12-13 this year, with the moon new and out of the way, which means the best meteor show of the summer is about to line up with genuinely dark skies. It’s exactly the kind of week that reminds you how long it’s been since you actually looked at your telescope, let alone cleaned it. If you pull your scope out of the closet and find a fogged corrector plate, a sticky focuser, or a faint haze of dust settled into the tube, that’s not bad luck. That’s what happens to gear that sits untouched for months at a time.
The good news is that telescope maintenance isn’t complicated, and most of it isn’t even about cleaning. It’s about how you handle dew, how you store the thing between sessions, and how often you resist the urge to “just wipe it off real quick.” Do those three things right and a decent telescope will outlive the box it came in.
New telescope owners tend to worry about dust on the optics, but dust is mostly harmless. A little dust on a mirror or lens scatters a tiny bit of light and does essentially nothing to the view. Moisture is the actual threat, and it shows up two ways: as dew that fogs your optics mid-session, and as trapped humidity that causes fungus or coating damage over the long term.
Dew forms when the temperature of your optics drops below the surrounding air’s dew point, which happens fast on a clear night because clear skies radiate heat away quickly. A simple dew shield, essentially a tube extension in front of your lens or corrector plate, buys you real time by insulating the glass and blocking some of that radiant heat loss. For longer sessions, especially in humid climates, a low-wattage dew heater strip wrapped around the optical tube near the front element keeps the glass just warm enough to stay above the dew point all night. If dew does form, resist wiping it off with a cloth. Rubbing a wet lens or mirror grinds whatever grit is on the surface into the coating. Instead, use a hair dryer on a cool or low setting held well back from the glass, or just let it air dry indoors before you pack the scope away.
This is the piece of advice that surprises most beginners: the biggest maintenance mistake isn’t neglect, it’s over-cleaning. Optical coatings are soft, and every cleaning pass is a chance to introduce a scratch. A telescope that’s a little dusty performs almost identically to one that’s spotless. Save the actual cleaning for visible smudges, fingerprints, or a genuinely dirty surface, not a light film of dust.
When it is time to clean, start with air, not liquid. A rubber blower bulb (not canned air, which can spit propellant) held a few inches from the glass will knock loose the majority of loose particles. If something’s still stuck, a lens pen or a soft camel-hair brush designed for optics can lift it without contact pressure. Liquid cleaning solutions and lint-free wipes are a last resort for stubborn smudges, and if you’re at all unsure, it’s worth having a specialty retailer or the manufacturer do it rather than risking a scratch on a mirror you can’t easily replace. Where and how you store a telescope matters more than most people expect, mostly because of temperature swings and trapped moisture rather than anything dramatic. A few habits go a long way:
Keep it at room temperature, out of direct sun and away from damp spaces. Garages, sheds, and basements are common storage spots, but they’re also where humidity swings hardest with the seasons, which is exactly the condition that encourages fungus growth on lens and mirror coatings over time. A closet inside your climate-controlled living space is a better call if you have the room.
Let it dry out completely before you close the case. If you brought the scope in from a dewy or humid session, leave it uncovered indoors for a few hours until any condensation has fully evaporated before sealing it back in its case or bag. Packing away a damp telescope is one of the fastest ways to trap moisture right against the optics.
Use silica gel packets near (not touching) the optics. A few desiccant packets inside the case, or tucked into the dew shield with the lens cap on, will actively pull ambient moisture out of the air around your gear.
Choose the right case material. Leather, fabric-lined, and wooden cases can hold onto moisture and harbor mold spores over years of use. Hard plastic cases, aluminum cases, or a simple clean nylon bag are safer long-term homes.
Cap everything, every time. Front caps, rear caps, and eyepiece caps take five seconds to replace and they’re your best defense against both dust and stray light contamination on sensitive coatings.

Optics get all the attention, but the mount, focuser, and tube hardware need occasional care too. A focuser that’s grinding or slipping usually just needs its tension adjusted or a light re-grease on the rack-and-pinion or Crayford bearing, per your manual — don’t use household oils, which attract dust and gum up over time. If you own a German equatorial mount, check that the RA and dec clutches move smoothly and that counterweight shafts aren’t developing rust, especially if you’ve been observing near the coast or in humid air. Altitude-azimuth mounts have fewer moving parts to worry about, but it’s still worth wiping down any exposed metal after a dewy night. Tripod legs and altitude bearings benefit from an occasional check of every bolt and thumbscrew, since vibration during transport tends to loosen fasteners over a season of use. A five-minute once-over before a big observing night, like the upcoming Perseids peak, beats discovering a wobbly mount in the dark.
Most long-term damage happens gradually, from small habits repeated over years, not from one bad night. A short routine after each session prevents almost everything above:
Let the scope reach room temperature and fully dry indoors before capping and storing it. Brush or blow off any visible dust before it has a chance to settle further into the tube. Wipe down exposed metal on the mount if it picked up dew. Store it capped, in its case, with desiccant, somewhere dry and temperature-stable. None of this takes more than a few minutes, and it’s the difference between a telescope that performs the same in year five as it did on day one, and one that needs a mirror recoat or a focuser rebuild well before its time.
Far less often than instinct suggests, realistically once or twice a year for a scope used regularly, and only when you can see an actual smudge or heavy dust buildup, not just a light haze. Cleaning carries real risk of scratching coatings, so it should always be the last option, not routine maintenance.
You can, but it’s not ideal. Garages swing in temperature and humidity more than living spaces do, which is the exact combination that encourages fungal growth on coatings over years of storage. If a garage is your only option, use a sealed case with fresh desiccant and check on it periodically rather than leaving it untouched for months.
Not necessarily. A light haze is often just dust or a thin film that a gentle air-blower pass will improve. True coating degradation looks more like a dull, gray, or pitted surface that doesn’t respond to careful cleaning. If you suspect actual coating wear on an older mirror, a specialty optics shop can recoat it, but it’s worth ruling out simple dust first since recoating isn’t cheap.
