Start With the Mount, Not the Camera

This surprises almost everyone, but it’s the single most important fact in beginner astrophotography: your tracking mount, not your camera, is what limits your results. A mediocre camera on a well-tracked equatorial mount will consistently out-perform an expensive camera on a mount that can’t hold a target steady for more than a few seconds. A camera you may already own, mounted on a star tracker or equatorial mount, opens up wide-field Milky Way shots and basic deep-sky imaging with stacked exposures. Where most serious hobbyists actually start.

A Realistic First Shopping List

If you already own a DSLR or mirrorless camera, the highest-impact purchase is a star tracker or entry-level equatorial mount, followed by an intervalometer for automated exposure sequences, then a sturdy tripod — in roughly that order of priority. A telescope isn’t required at all for wide-field Milky Way and constellation photography; it only becomes necessary once you’re targeting smaller objects like specific nebulae or galaxies.
